Jam packed summer domestic schedule revealed

IT has been a big day at Cricket Australia, with the domestic season fixtures all dropping this morning.

The women’s domestic season will look very different as compared to recent season.

It will begin with what is being dubbed the ‘T20 Spring Challenge’, which will see teams aligned with the WBBL clubs plus a team from the ACT compete in a mini tournament ahead of the WBBL10 season, and was created to ensure that there is no overall reduction in women’s domestic games after the WBBL season was shortened.

The tournament – set to be held in Adelaide and Sydney – will kick off on October 11, and will see 18 regular season games played across seven days, before two semi-finals on October 19 and a final on October 20. Crucially, the majority of the top Australian players will not be available for this tournament because they will be in Bangladesh at the T20 World Cup.

Even before all of this, the WNCL season kicks off on September 24 with Western Australia hosting reigning champions Tasmania to kick off the entire season. Two WNCL rounds are slated to take place before the competition breaks for the Spring Challenge and WBBL season, then it will recommence on December 14. In an interesting twist of fate, with the timing off the international calendar, most of the country’s top players will play next to none of the WNCL season.

The men’s summer structure has gotten a bit of a shake up too.

Unlike the last few years, the leading male players will get a rare chance to play some Sheffield Shield cricket before the Test team’s series against India. It has been announced four Shield rounds will be played before that first match against India on November 22.

All the states will begin their summer though with a bunch of One Day Cup games – kicking off with NSW taking on Western Australia on September 22 – before the Shield kicks off. In that opening Shield round, which will begin on October 8, NSW will take on South Australia, Victoria will take on Tasmania and Western Australia will take on Queensland.
