NSW put out the Fire to cause upset

NEW South Wales has made a perfect start to its 2024/25 WNCL campaign with a four-wicket win over Queensland yesterday. Queensland made 9/266 off its 50 overs, before NSW reached the target with exactly two overs to spare.

The Fire had a rough start to their innings, falling to 2/34 inside the first seven and a half overs. The run rate did steady for a while, before the wickets started to pick up in regularity.

An 80-run sixth wicket partnership was the highlight of the later half of the innings, but once Sianna Ginger fell the wickets started to pick up and the partnerships shrunk.

English star Lauren Winfield-Hill made an impact straight away for her new side with a solid 65, while Georgia Redmayne made 48 at the top of the order and Jess Jonassen made 41.

On the other side of the equation Sammy-Jo Johnson was a star with ball in hand with four wickets to her name, while Sarah Coyte and Maitlan Brown picked up two each.

The Breakers made a really good start to their chase with a 66-run opening partnership, but then lost two wickets in as many balls.

Claire Moore and Georgia Adams then put on a 77-run third wicket partnership, but as the wickets started to pick up, the partnerships shrunk.

However, Brown and Johnson had other ideas, putting on a 90-run partnership to get the Breakers back on track and over the line, showing that New South Wales’ tail does have a sting to it after all.

Johnson finished on 46 not out and Brown on 40 not out, but it was Adams who was the innings’ top scorer with 63, and at the top of the order Tahlia Wilson made 48.

Meanwhile for Queensland Ginger was the start with ball in hand with four wickets to her name, while Grace Parsons and Georgia Voll picked up one each.
