THE 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup got underway overnight, with Pakistan and Bangladesh coming away with the wins on day one of competition.
Bangladesh skittles Scotland
Bangladesh was the first side to pick up a win this tournament, beating Scotland by 16 runs in the tournament opener.
Setting the Scots 120 for the win, the Bangladeshis then restricted the competition minnows to 7/103 from their 20 overs.
For the victorious Bangladesh side much of their runs came from the top of their order, with Sobhana Mostary the pick of the bunch with 36. In terms of bowlers, Ritu Moni was the pick of the bunch, taking two wickets.
Meanwhile for Scotland Saskia Horley was the pick of the bowlers, taking 3/13 off only two overs, while Sarah Bryce’s 49 not out was the star performance of the batting innings, with no one else making more than 11.
Pakistan powers past Sri Lanka
In the day’s second match, it was Pakistan who emerged victorious, comfortably defeating Sri Lanka by 31 runs.
Pakistan was bowled out for 116 before restricting Sri Lanka to just 9/85 off its 20 overs.
Pakistan’s middle order was where most of its runs came from, with captain Fatima Sana Khan top scoring with 30 in an innings that included three fours and a six. Sadia Iqbal was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets, while Sana Khan, Omaima Sohail and Nashra Sundhu all took two each.
Meanwhile for Sri Lanka the wicket taking duties were very concentrated, with Udeshika Prabodani, Sugandika Kumari and captain Chamari Athapaththu all picking up three wickets each. The scoring was also very concentrated too, with only two batters making a double digit score.
