Queensland thumps WA to secure first win of the WNCL season
QUEENSLAND have secured its first win of the Women’s National Cricket League season with an emphatic win against Western Australia.
Taking the bonus points as a result of the eight-wicket win, Queensland’s bowlers were ruthless, bowling out WA for just 81 runs.
Nicola Hancock got the first WA wicket of the day, taking out Chloe Piparo. This was an early blow considering Piparo’s standing in the batting ranks at WA and her start of 11 off 18 balls.
Lucy Hamilton then notched up two wickets in two overs, claiming Maddy Darke and Bhavisha Devchand. Darke (five off 24 balls) was particularly wasteful at the crease ending with a strike rate of 20.83.
Then around the 13-over mark, Queensland spinner Jess Jonassen got in on the action, taking the wickets of both Lisa Griffith and Mathilda Carmichael within two overs.
Now at 7-50, it was WA’s debutant Chloe Bartholomew that was next, falling for nought off 17 balls. She was claimed by Charli Knott, the first of Knott’s three wickets.
After Lilly Mills and Charis Bekker fell to Knott, it was Sianna Ginger who ended the bowling innings knocking over Taneale Peschel. WA’s Zoe Britcliffe finished her innings with a score of 13 off 20 not out.
In reply the Queensland’s were clinical despite the early wicket of Georgia Redmayne who was taken by Mills in the third over.
Four overs later, it was Knott who was claimed by Bekker although at 2-27, it would take a collapse for Queensland to give the West Australians any hope.
It was the mighty effort of Georgia Voll that secured the win with 34.4 overs remaining. Voll top scored with 61 off 42, finishing the innings alongside Jonassen who notched up 19 off 31, both were not out.
Voll was exceptional, she hit 12 boundaries with three fours coming in just the second over of the innings.
