Vics Break NSW Spirit to take first up win

VICTORIA got its 2024/25 WNCL campaign off to the perfect start, narrowly defeating rival New South Wales by two wickets.

NSW made 226 before being bowled out, before Victoria reached the target on the penultimate ball of the innings. NSW made an okay start to its innings, but things really got going in the second wicket partnership that was ultimately 80 runs.

However, everything fell apart a bit in the middle of the innings, with NSW going from 2/106 to 5/122 in the space of four and a bit overs.

The sixth wicket was a bit of a stabilising one, but then things fell apart again, losing the final five wickets for 51 runs to be all out with three overs remaining in the innings.

Much of NSW’s score came in the top half of its batting order, with Tahlia Wilson top scoring with 47 and Elsa Hunter not too far behind on 39.

Meanwhile for the Victorians Rhys McKenna was the pick of the bowlers with four wickets, while Tess Flintoff took three and Sophie Day took two.

In reply, the innings was going pretty well for the Victorians, needing 16 runs off the last four overs with four wickets still in the shed. However, when Georgia Adams then picked up two wickets in an over, and gave the Breakers a sniff.

But in the end, Day held her nerve and smacked a four off the penultimate ball of the innings to get the visitors over the line.

Earlier in the innings though it was Nicole Faltum and Ella Hayward who starred, making 68 and 49 respectively.

Meanwhile Adams ended her innings with three wickets to her name, while Samantha Bates picked up two wickets in her first match against her old side and Sammy-Jo Johnson also picked up two wickets.
