Winners go bang but not all were expected

DAY TWO of the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup saw contrasting fortunes for the favourites of the two matches.

South Africa wallops Windies

South Africa got its campaign off to the perfect start, absolutely destroying the West Indies to the tune of a 10-wicket win. After restricting their opponents to 6/118 off its 20 overs, South Africa reached the target with 13 balls spare.

Nonkululeko Mlaba was a menace with ball in hand, taking four wickets to rip through the West Indian batting line up. Marizanne Kapp also took two wickets.

In reply, Laura Wolvaardt (59 not out) and Tazmin Brits (57 not out) cruised to the victory target. Meanwhile for the West Indies Stafanie Taylor was the only one to really get much of a start with the bat, striking two fours and a six on her way to 44 not out.

New Zealand score huge upset over India

The match went less to plan for India, who were trounced by New Zealand in a huge upset. New Zealand made 4/160 from its 20 overs, before bowling India out for 102 with an over left in the innings.

Sophie Devine was the star for New Zealand, and she had a true captain’s performance. She whacked seven fours on her way to 57 not out, before taking four wickets to also top the wicket taking tally for her country. Lea Tahuhu also took three wickets while Eden Carson took two.

Meanwhile for India, Renuka Singh Thakur was the only multiple wicket taker with two to her name, while none of India’s batters made more than captain Harmanpreet Kaur’s 15. Kaur was also the only Indian batter to truly outscore the extras tally of 13.
