Windies wash away doubters to book semi spot at World Cup

THE WEST Indies have defied expectations to top their group at the T20 World Cup and move through to the semi final stage.

It comes on the back of a victory over England in their final group stage game overnight.

England made 7/141 from its 20 overs, before the West Indies reached that target with two overs to spare.

One bright spark in the English innings was Natalie Sciver-Brunt, who blasted five fours on her way to 57 not out.

She was the true backbone of the innings, as only three other batters made double-figure scores, with the highest of those being Heather Knight’s 21 before she had to retire hurt.

Meanwhile for the West Indies, Afy Fletcher was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets to her name, while captain Hayley Matthews claimed two poles and stalwart Deandra Dottin managed one.

In reply, Matthews and Qiana Joseph got the West Indian chase off to a perfect start with a 102-run opening partnership. Joseph went on to make 52 while Matthews made an even 50, as both players blasted eight boundaries.

It meant that when they were both dismissed just after the halfway point of the innings, there was not too much left for the rest of the batting order to do, so they got the job done with relative ease.

On the flipside of the equation, Sciver-Brunt, Sophie Ecclestone and Sarah Glenn all picked up a wicket each.

The win sees the West Indies jump to the top of Group B and will play New Zealand in the semi finals.

Meanwhile for the English, the loss gave them enough of a hit to their run rate that they slipped behind South Africa on the Group B ladder that and they have been eliminated from the tournament.
