2024 T20 Spring Challenge: Semi-Finals
IT will be the Brisbane Heat and Hobart Hurricanes that will play off in Sunday’s maiden T20 Spring Challenge final after qualifying on Saturday.
Brisbane Heat 9-160 defeated Adelaide Strikers 9-122
Reversing the result of last season’s WBBL decider, the Brisbane Heat bested the Adelaide Strikers to the tune of 38 runs to move through to the final.
After being sent in by the Strikers, it was youngster Sianna Ginger, wicketkeeper Georgia Redmayne and veteran Jess Jonassen that put the Heat into a winning position in their batting innings.
Ginger was the highest scorer with 46 off 38, while Redmayne (35 off 24) and Jonassen (26 off 24) kept the run rate ticking over.
Conversely, the Adelaide bowlers had a smattering of wickets without being outstanding overall. Courtney Neale was expensive with 2/27 off three overs, although she removed the dangerous Laura Harris for just 14 runs. While Anesu Mushangwe bowled out her four overs, conceding 26 runs and netting two wickets of her own.
For the Brisbane bowlers, it was the ever-reliable Nicola Hancock (4-24) that was able to keep the wickets coming to stop Adelaide from being able to gain their footing.
Ellie Johnston (35 off 27) top-scored for the Strikers, with Bridget Patterson (32 off 35) also assisting the team to their total, although falling short. They lost their last six wickets for just 51 runs.
Hobart Hurricanes 7-166 defeated Melbourne Stars (No result due to rain)
In the second match, there were only 18.4 overs played in the contest between the Hurricanes and the Stars, with the former only moving on due to finishing higher on the ladder.
In that game, it was the veteran all-rounder Nicola Carey that was the main talking point. She scored a scintillating 77 runs off 43 balls, which included 13 fours.
The only teammates that came close to her contribution with the bat were Lizelle Lee (22 off 16) and Emma Manix-Geeves (21 not out off 19). Carey and Manix-Geeves formed an important 67 run partnership for Melbourne which could have been match-winning.
It was their former Hurricanes teammate Maisy Gibson, that did the damage for the Stars netting three wickets, conceding 29 runs in her four overs. She removed the veterans Elyse Villani, Carey and Molly Strano.
