AFTER two days of action in WBBL10, every side has now played one match so everyone is off and running. Let us take a look at who starred in their respective opening matches, and what that might tell us for the rest of the reason.
BATTING
Looking at the top five run scorers from the opening quartet of matches, two things stand out.
All-rounders dominated the run scoring in the opening four matches of the season, with four of the five players in question being all rounders.
The odd one out though was Georgia Wareham, who despite not being able to get the Renegades over the line really led from the front with an innings of 61.
The only player that beat her was Ellyse Perry with an innings of 81, while the rest of the top five was Nicola Carey (52), Tahlia McGrath (51 not out) and Phoebe Litchfield (51).
By interesting comparison, it was not a strong opening game for any of the top three in the batting from last season, with Beth Mooney making 31, Grace Harris making 29 and Chamari Athapaththu dismissed for a golden duck.
BOWLING
There were plenty of stellar bowling performances, with all of the top five best bowling performances being three wicket performances and the only thing differentiating the quintet being how many runs they conceded.
Heather Graham topped the tally, only conceding 19 runs from her four overs bowled.
Samantha Bates had the second best figures, who was able to continue her strong performance from the Spring Challenge.
The rest of the top five was Alana King, Sophie Day and Wareham, with Wareham’s allround performance even more impressive considering her side did not win.
INTERESTING COINCIDENCE
The one interesting similarity between both lists is that the majority of the top five did not go on to win their respective match. The player who topped the tally did and the player in third did, but the players in second, fourth and fifth did not.
