Carey catapults ‘Canes to first up win

IN WHAT was the first WBBL|10 game for the Hobart Hurricanes and the Sydney Thunder last night, it was the former that won in front of a home crowd at Ninja Stadium.

Batting first, the Hurricanes set a total of 141 off their 20 overs with seven wickets in the shed. In the batting innings, it was Nicola Carey (52 off 38) that was instrumental for her side.

She was the highest scorer in her side, being the main contributor of runs after Lizelle Lee (7 off 9), Danni Wyatt-Hodge (18 off 18) and Elyse Villani (21 off 15) failed to fire in the top order.

After she got out it was Tabatha Saville (23 not out off 16) that was able to help add to their score.

For the Thunder the pick of their bowlers was Samantha Bates who took 3/20 off four overs, as well as Chamari Athapaththu who contributed with a pair of wickets (2-26).

In their quest to chase down Hobart’s total, Athapaththu and Georgia Voll both got out cheaply, going for a golden duck and eight runs respectively.

In her first game as skipper, Phoebe Litchfield stood tall, delivering 51 runs off 37 balls. Apart from Anika Learoyd though, the pair were on their own with wickets falling around them.

Tahlia Wilson (three off four), Georgia Adams (three off six), Sammy-Jo Johnson (one off three), Hannah Darlington (four off eight), Ella Briscoe (six not out off 11), Shabnim Ismail (diamond duck) and Bates (one off four) were all taking deliveries without troubling the bowlers with their scoring rate.

The inability to put pressure on the Hurricanes bowlers resulted in a thumping loss for the lime green team.

For the Hurricanes, it was the usual suspects that performed for them with Molly Strano (1-22), Heather Graham (3-19), Chloe Tryon (2-19) and Carey (1-18) getting amongst the action.

Club debutant Lauren Smith (2-17) was also particularly effective, taking the wickets of Voll and Wilson to stop the Thunder from scoring from the start.
