Sixers score crucial win as inconsistency bites ‘Canes

THE SYDNEY Sixers picked up a crucial second WBBL10 win after narrowly defeating the Hobart Hurricanes last night.

Sydney made 7/155 from its 20 overs, before restricting the Hurricanes to 9/149 off theirs.

The Sixers had an ok start to their innings but kept losing wickets, and fell to 3/51 off the first seven overs. However things improved in the fourth wicket partnership of 61 runs turned things around for the Sixers. This boost to the Sixers innings allowed them to post the very competitive total they ultimately did

Ellyse Perry truly was the star with the bat for those in magenta. Without her 62-ball, 86-run innings (which included 11 fours and two sixes), the Sixers would have been in real trouble as the next biggest innings was Hollie Armitage’s 30.

Meanwhile for the Hurricanes Chloe Tryon and Nicola Carey picked up a pair of wickets each, while Zoe Cooke, Heather Graham and Amy Smith also got amongst the wicket taking.

In reply the Hurricanes’ chase got off to an awful start, falling to 1/4 of the second ball of the innings. They then responded with a 42 run second wicket partnership, but it took them almost six overs to achieve that partnership so they needed to pick up the pace if they wanted to have any hope of getting the win.

Their next few partnerships followed a pattern of one partnership at a good run rate pace, before being followed by a slow partnership that did not generate many runs.

This inconsistency combined with losing a lot of wickets means that although the Hurricanes did get pretty close to their target score, they fell agonisingly short and if their partnerships had been more consistent, things may have been a little different.

None of the Hurricanes’ batters really got much of a start, with Danni Wyatt-Hodge’s 30 being the best of the bunch.

Mwanwhile for the Sixers Lauren Cheatle, Sophie Ecclestone and Caoimhe Bray all picked up two wickets, while Courtney Sippel and Ash Gardner picked up one wicket each.
