Renegades reel in record chase to break Striker hearts
THE MELBOURNE Renegades pulled off the highest successful run chase in WBBL history last night, defeating the Adelaide Strikers by nine wickets in the process.
Adelaide made a whopping 8/185, before the Renegades reached the target with 17 balls to spare.
Smriti Mandhana and Katie Mack helped get the Strikers off to a really good start, blasting a 56-run opening partnership off their powerplay.
Although only one other partnership (a 66-run third wicket partnership) was able to reach the heights of that opening combination, the speed with which those two partnerships went at meant that the Strikers were able to reach that huge score.
Mandhana went on to make 40 at the top of the innings, while Tahlia McGrath fell one short of a half century in an innings that contained eight fours and a six.
Meanwhile for the Renegades Hayley Matthews was the pick of the bowlers with two wickets, while Milly Illingworth, Alice Capsey, Deandra Dottin and Sarah Coyte also all got amongst the wicket taking.
In reply, Matthews and Capsey got off to a great start for the Renegades, putting on a 101 run partnership off just over 11 and a half overs.
Once Capsey was dismissed the run scoring did not ease up as Dottin joined her fellow West Indian at the crease and kept the pace up.
Matthews was a woman on a mission, whacking 85 not out off just 54 balls, which included 12 fours and two sixes. Dottin went even quicker, whacking 46 not out off just 18 balls, which included seven fours and a six.
The Renegades did not come away from the match unscathed though as Courtney Webb was forced to retire hurt while batting.
On the other side of the equation, Darcie Brown was the only Adelaide bowler who was able to pick up a wicket.
