Renshaw lets rip as Queensland tames Tigers

MATTHEW Renshaw‘s fourth List A century has propelled Queensland into third place on the One-Day Cup table after defeating Tasmania by 56 runs in Hobart yesterday. Batting at number four, the left-hander played with freedom en route to 122 runs off 99 deliveries after the Bulls were sent in to bat.

In the rain affected result, Queensland posted 6-319 from 46.3 overs. Although, Tasmania’s target was revised to read 338 from 46 overs via the DLS Method. The hosts could only manage 281 in reply as they were bowled out with 10 balls remaining in their innings. They are now dwindling in fifth spot.

Renshaw set up the victory in a key fourth-wicket stand alongside Jack Clayton (72 off 57). The pair put on 154 runs to take Queensland from 3-114 to 4-268. The partnership ended at the beginning of the second power play, as Clayton holed out with his side primed to launch into a massive total.

Nearly of Queensland’s top order achieved starts. Opener Ben McDermott (3) was undone by Billy Stanlake’s pace and bounce in the second over, but the likes of Jimmy Peirson (43 off 57) and debutant Angus Lovell (42 off 38) chimed in nicely before Renshaw and Clayton took over.

The rain came after 46 overs, cutting Queensland’s innings short. Former Bull Matthew Kuhnemann was the pick of Tasmania’s bowlers, claiming 3-49 from his full allotment of 10 overs. Along with Stanlake, Tom Rogers (1-59) and Mitchell Owen (1-71) also prised wickets but conceded over a run a ball.

Tasmania’s did well to hover above Queensland’s worm for much of its chase, though consistent wickets rendered the required rate unassailable. Veteran Matthew Wade (68 off 53) and livewire Jake Weatherald (55 off 32) did their part in the middle order, but were ultimately undone.

A 67-run rearguard partnership between Rogers (38 off 48) and Kuhnemann (34* off 31) ensured Tasmania would avoid the bonus point loss by surpassing 270. They entered the crease at 8-207. It was far too little, too late for the hosts though, as they fell comfortably short of the set total.

All six One-Day Cup sides will next be in action during February of 2025. The Tigers recommence the season at home against New South Wales on February 5, before Queensland hosts the Blues on February 13. South Australia currently tops the table with three wins and one loss.
