NSW repeats history to break Tasmania again
NEW South Wales has made it two from two against Tasmania in the WNCL in the last week, most recently winning by 159 runs. NSW first made 5/288 from its 50 overs, before Tasmania could only muster 129 before being bowled out.
The start to NSW’s innings was chaotic, blasting 10 runs off the first five balls before losing the Breakers lost their first wicket on the sixth ball. The run scoring did not ease up from there, with Elsa Hunter and Anika Learoyd putting on a 159-run partnership for the second wicket.
Although no other partnerships got anywhere near that big, Hunter and Learoyd’s work made a huge difference to what the Breakers were able to put on the board. Hunter went on to make 93 while Learoyd made 71. Georgia Adams also had a great day at the crease, making 62 not out.
Meanwhile for the home side, Molly Strano was the pick of the bowlers with two wickets to her name.
Given the end result, it was not a surprise that Tasmania’s chase did not get off to a great start, falling to 1/9 10 balls into the innings. Things did not really improve from there, going from 2/29 to 3/29 in the same over, and runs being really hard to come by for just about the entire innings. The best partnership of the whole innings was the 35 run seventh wicket partnership.
Much of Tasmania’s runs came in the tail end, with the top scorer being Amy Smith with 25. Three of the top four scorers for the Tigers were batters eight, nine and 10 in the order.
Meanwhile for the Breakers young quick Caoimhe Bray was the star with ball in hand with three wickets to her name, while Maitlan Brown and Sam Bates picked up a pair of wickets each.
