Riotous Renegades humble Hurricanes in Geelong

MELBOURNE Renegades have trounced the Hobart Hurricanes in a six-wicket victory at GMHBA Stadium, spearheaded by in-form import Tim Seifert. After his side skittled the ‘Canes for 74 on a bowler friendly pitch, the gloveman remained unbeaten on 37 (19) to help surpass the target in just nine overs.

Seifert’s latest exploits, which included six fours and two sixes, backed up his half-century on debut. Though, this time carried the Renegades to their first win of the BBL|14 season. The New Zealander also took a blinder behind the stumps to remove Chris Jordan for nought off the bowling of Fergus O’Neill.

O’Neill was part of the trio of Renegades bowlers to claim three wickets, doing so in a single scintillating over. Along with nabbing Jordan first ball, he also sent Tim David packing for a two-ball duck, and had fellow big-hitter Nikhil Chaudhary sky one after posting just two runs.

Player of the Match Tom Rogers (3-25) had set the tone earlier with the first three wickets of the match, while skipper Will Sutherland (3-14) claimed the big wickets of Shai Hope (13 off 14) and Nathan Ellis (35 off 29). After Hobart fell to 8-40, Ellis helped add some bulk to the slender total.

His and Hope’s contributions were two of just three double-digit scores in the Hurricanes’ batting dig, which included four ducks (two golden). The visitors also lost keeper-batsman Matthew Wade to a calf niggle during the bowling innings, though he hopes to miss only one game.

Seifert aside, things weren’t much easier for the Renegades batters. Opening pair Jake Fraser-McGurk (5) and Josh Brown (13) went cheaply, as did English imports Jacob Bethell (3) and Laurie Evans (7) in the middle order. Mackenzie Harvey (10*) produced the winning runs alongside Seifert.

A potential blessing for the Hurricanes is their quick turnaround to make amends against Perth Scorchers at Ninja Stadium tomorrow night. Meanwhile, the Renegades will hope to improve on their 1-1 record when they also host the Scorchers, on December 23 at Marvel Stadium.
