‘Gades get it done despite slow start

AN UNBELIEVABLE turnaround from the Melbourne Renegades has helped the team secure a crucial four-wicket win over the Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League action at Optus Stadium on Tuesday night.

The Renegades overcame a horror start to their innings, where they were 4/10 at one stage and truly on the ropes. However, Will Sutherland and Tom Rogers starred to steer their side to victory despite that result looking extremely unlikely at the start of the innings.

The Renegades won the toss and elected to bowl first, sending the Scorchers out to the crease. Test all-rounder Mitch Marsh was unable to make an impact in his Big Bash return, and was dismissed for a duck, while emerging talent Cooper Connelly suffered the same fate.

A late cameo from Ashton Agar (51 not out) helped the Scorchers get to a respectable total of 147, but on an Optus Stadium pitch that offered plenty of pace, the home side would need to put in a good performance with ball in hand.

It was a disastrous start for the Renegades, who saw their top order collapse completely, with four players combining for two or less runs. It saw the visitors sit at 4/10 and nearly out of the game completely, needing a miracle to pull off the win.

It was the unlikely partnership of Sutherland and Rogers that pulled Melbourne off the canvas, with Melbourne’s skipper posting a game-breaking 70 runs off 45 deliveries in inspirational fashion, while Rogers knocked an unbeaten 49 runs to put the finishing touches on the result.

The ending was not without drama, with the Renegades still needing 12 off the final over to get the job done. Perth looked to have secured a huge breakthrough when Rogers was dismissed by Matt Kelly, but his full toss was deemed a no ball, allowing Melbourne to get the job done with two balls to spare and keep its quest for a finals spot alive.
