THE ACT has picked up its first win of the 2024/25 WNCL season after an upset two wicket win over Victoria yesterday.
After bowling out Victoria for just 180, the Meteors reached that target with just over three overs to spare.
Unlike most matches they play, the Meteors were able to take wickets with the ball on a fairly regular basis, which really stifled the visitors’ momentum.
The highest partnership the Victorians mustered was the 32 run third wicket partnership between Sophie Reid and Tess Flintoff, with most partnerships between about 10 and 20 runs. Things could have been even worse for the Victorians if ACT had bowled straight, with the Meteors conceding a whopping 22 wides.
Youngster Grace Dignam was the star with ball in hand for the Meteors, taking four wickets. She was ably assisted by Gabby Sutcliffe and Alisha Bates, who both took two wickets each.
Meanwhile Reid ultimately top scored for the Victorians with 31, with Flintoff making 22 and Georgia Prestwidge not far behind on 21.
ACT had a shaky start to its innings, but 55 run third wicket partnership got things back on track, and with less than 80 runs to get in about 28 overs, things were looking pretty good for the competition minnows.
There was a bit of a wobble after Katie Mack was dismissed, but ultimately the Meteors’ tail held firm to get their side over the line.
Mack was the core of the ACT innings, scoring a very helpful 51 and being one half of that innings stabilising partnership with Carly Leeson.
Meanwhile for Victoria Flintoff, Sophie Day and Ella Hayward all picked up two wickets each.
The teams face each other again in a return fixture at the same venue tomorrow, with the fixture particularly a must win for the Victorians if they want to stay in the running for the final. One thing in Victoria’s favour though is that the Vics have games in hand over every team ahead of them on the ladder.
