Warriors run out of puff as Breakers pick up important win
WESTERN Australia is still looking for its first win of the WNCL season after suffering a 41 run loss to New South Wales yesterday.
After NSW made 6/276 from its 50 overs, Western Australia was then only able to make 235 before being bowled out.
After an alright start to its innings, NSW then went bang in the third wicket, recording a 157 run third wicket partnership to really accelerate the innings forward. Although things slowed considerably for the visitors after that, that third wicket partnership meant that it did not mean total disaster.
Anika Learoyd was the star with the bat for the Breakers, belting 101 in an innings that included 11 fours and a six.
Meanwhile for the Western Australians the wicket taking duties were shared very evenly, with no one picking up more than one wicket.
The home side made a good fist of the chase. Their opening partnership was 65 runs and had a number of solid partnerships early in their innings, but they kept losing too many wickets too quickly, and as the wickets started to tumble the momentum started to dissipate. For example, they went from 7/214 at the beginning of the 45th over, to all out for 235 just over three overs later.
Opener Maddy Darke was the pick of the Western Australian batters, making 73 runs at almost a run a ball.
On the flip side, for the Breakers Georgia Adams was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets to her name, while Lauren Cheatle and Sarah Coyte picked up two wickets each.
The teams face each other again in a return fixture at the same venue tomorrow, with the fixture particularly important for NSW as they try and stay in the top two of the WNCL ladder and keep the chasing pack at bay.
