Harris hoists hosts to big win over reigning champions
A MONSTER batting performance from Queensland star Grace Harris has propelled the Fire to a 14-run win over defending WNCL champions Tasmania.
After being sent in to bat at Allan Border Field, the hosts posted 294 from 43 overs before bowling out Tasmania out for 280 with seven balls to spare.
The Fire did not get off to the best of starts, falling to 2/8 during the third over.
But after a 71-run fourth wicket partnership and a 79-run sixth wicket partnership, that bad start became a distant memory.
A large part of that success with the bat was Harris. Perhaps warming up for her Ashes duties next week, she belted 140 off just 78 balls in an innings that included 13 fours and a whopping eight sixes.
Charli Knott also had a solid day with bat in hand, hitting six fours and a six on her way to 58.
Meanwhile for Tasmania, the wicket taking duties were shared pretty evenly, with Molly Strano, Nicola Carey, Amy Smith and Maisy Gibson all picking up two poles apiece.
Tasmania made a slow start to its innings, but a 165-run partnership between opener Nicola Carey and Emma Manix-Geeves got things back on track. However, things fell apart once that partnership was broken, and the Tigers then lost 5/72 to be all out in the penultimate over.
Carey had a stellar day with the bat for Tasmania, belting 13 fours and a six on her way to 120. Her partner in crime, Manix-Geeves, also showed out with a well made 80 off 88.
Meanwhile for Queensland, Courtney Sippel picked up a trio of wickets, as Nicola Hancock, Sianna Ginger and Jess Jonassen all nabbed two wickets each.
The win rockets Queensland to the top of the WNCL ladder, while for Tasmania its danger time at the moment, with the threat of being unable to defend their title becoming a real possibility.
