Openers set mission impossible for travelling Irish

ANOTHER dominant batting performance from India has seen the home side whitewash its three-match One Day International series with Ireland, after a 304-run win in the final match of the series.

India posted a monster total of 5/435 from its 50 overs, before skittling Ireland for just 131 in the 32nd over. The result marked India’s highest-ever women’s ODI total and margin of victory.

Openers Pratika Rawal and captain Smriti Mandhana got the home side off to the perfect of starts, posting an opening run partnership of 233 in 26 and a half overs. Rawal and Richa Ghosh continued the momentum in the second wicket partnership of 104, and even though the runs did slow a bit as the wickets started to flow, by that point the damage was well and truly already done.

Ireland’s cause was hardly helped by wayward bowling at times, with the visitors conceding 15 wides among a total extras tally of 29.

Rawal was ultimately the top scorer for the home side with 154 off just 129 balls, while Mandhana smashed a rapid 135 and Ghosh made 59.

Meanwhile for the Irish, Orla Prendergast was the only bowler to take more than one wicket.

In reply the Irish certainly tried to go at a pace that would get them to the monster total, but once the wickets started to fall, things started to unravel, and once they really started there was no way of stopping that tidal wave of momentum. They lost their last six wickets for 31 runs in the space of just over 14 overs to wrap things up pretty quickly.

Deepti Sharma was the pick of the Indian bowlers with three wickets, while Tanuja Kanwer picked up two.

Meanwhile for Ireland Sarah Forbes (41) and Prendergast (36) were the only ones to get much of a start for the visitors.
