BBL|14 stats recap: Scorchers top charts despite finals miss
PERTH Scorchers pair Cooper Connolly and Jason Behrendorff took out the main honours in the latest Big Bash season, despite their side being booted out of the finals race last night. Connolly’s 351 runs were enough for the Golden Bat, while Behrendorff snatched the Golden Arm with his 17 wickets.
Connolly belted two half-centuries in the first three games for a high score of 66. His average of 50.14 was helped by unbeaten knocks of 48 and 43 in consecutive games, while his 39 not out against Adelaide Strikers on Saturday night momentarily saw the Scorchers snatch fourth spot.
The emerging allrounder surpassed Sydney Thunder captain David Warner (346 runs) in his final home-and-away appearance to take out the honour in somewhat of a passing of the torch. Connolly is well poised for a Test debut as he prepares for Australia’s tour of Sri Lanka later this month.
Hobart Hurricanes opener Mitchell Owen was the only other batter to surpass 300 runs, and was the only member of the top five run getters to boast a century. Melbourne Stars mainstays Glenn Maxwell (297 runs) and Marcus Stoinis (296) rounded out the list having helped rally their side into finals.
Behrendorff joined Connolly in moving atop the standings at the final time of asking, claiming 3-21 in the Scorchers’ win over Adelaide. The Player of the Match performance was enough to see him surpass Melbourne Renegades spearhead Tom Rogers, who took 16 wickets.
One of the stories of the season was Mark Steketee‘s 2025 resurgence, with the wicket-taking machine joining Lance Morris and Lloyd Pope on 15 poles. The seamer struck at an average of 8.60 in five games, boasting the best figures of the season (5-17). No other bowler claimed a five-wicket haul.
