Group A wraps up, next stage all set at World Cup
YESTERDAY’S action in the Under 19 World Cup saw Group A play their last group matches, and as such finalise who was making the Super Sixes stage of the tournament.
In the earlier match, the West Indies picked up their first win of the tournament and as such booked their spot in the Super Sixes stage after beating Malaysia by 53 runs.
The West Indies made 7/112, before bowling the tournament hosts out for just 59.
One thing that did not help the Malaysians was the number of extras they conceded, with a shopping 23 wides bowled in a total extras tally of 27. Things could have also been worse for Malaysia if the West Indies had bowled straight, with the victors conceding 21 extras themselves.
On the flipside Samara Ramnath had a stellar day with ball in hand, finishing with 4/6 from her four overs. Naijanni Cumberbatch and Erin Deane also took two wickets each.
In the later game, India kept its undefeated run at the tournament in tact with a massive 60 run win over neighbour Sri Lanka.
India only posted 9/118, but then thanks to some stellar bowling only let Sri Lanka get to 9/58 from its 20 overs.
Trisha Gongadi was the backbone of the Indian batting innings, making 49. Later Shabnam, Joshitha V J and Parunika Sisodia all took two wickets each.
Meanwhile for Sri Lanka Pramudi Methsara, Limansa Thilakaratne and Aseni Thalagune took a pair of wickets each.
Today’s action sees the teams who finished fourth in the groups play off for one last consolation match. Pakistan is set to play Samoa while Malaysia will take on Nepal. Then it is on to the Super Sixes, where the 12 remaining teams will play two more matches before the semi finalists are determined. On the opening day of the Super Sixes, USA will take on New Zealand, England will take on Nigeria, Australia will take on the West Indies and South Africa will take on Ireland.
