Neighbours finish tournament on a high with maiden wins

YESTERDAY’S Under 19 World Cup action saw the four teams who had finished last in their respective groups play one last consolation match before heading home, having been eliminated from the competition.

In the earlier of the two matches, Pakistan finished its tournament on a high with a comfortable 52-run win over Samoa.

Batting first, Pakistan wobbled its way to 8/136.

No one set the world alight with bat in hand, but they pushed through with partnerships roughly 10-30 runs large.

Maham Anees was the pick of the Pakistani batters with 28, but only she and Fatima Khan outscored the extras tally of 21.

Meanwhile for Samoa, Norah Jade Salima was the pick of the bowlers with a trio of wickets to her name.

In reply, Samoa made a relatively speedy start, but once the wickets started to fall momentum stalled and they never recovered, ultimately bowled out for 84.

Haniah Ahmer starred with the ball for Pakistan, taking four wickets, while Fatima Khan and Quratulain took two each.

Later in the day it was a battle of tournament debutants, with Nepal emerging victorious over Malaysia by seven wickets.

Malaysia was first bowled out for 45, before Nepal reached the target in 11 overs.

In hindsight, Malaysia falling to 1/1 in the opening over was a sign of things to come.

Only one Malaysian batter made a double-figure score as some excellent bowling from Nepal meant that Malaysia’s momentum was severely hampered.

Puja Mahato was chief destroyer was the ball for Nepal, taking four wickets, while Rachana Chaudhary managed three.

Their efforts left Nepal with a pretty easy task with the bat, and although they did lose a few wickets early, got the job done easily after the early wobble.
