Rain returns but does not completely ruin World Cup action

THE PAST weekend at the Under 19 World Cup saw the start of the Super Sixes stage, which is the stage where every team still left in the competition plays two extra games before the semi finalists are confirmed.

Unfortunately rain still reared its ugly head, meaning everyone had varying degrees of success in getting their first matches of the Super Sixes stage to happen.

England vs Nigeria

Unfortunately for the English and Nigerians, the rain proved too much of an opponent to overcome and their match was abandoned before the toss even happened.

USA vs New Zealand

New Zealand picked up another win for this tournament after beating the USA by 18 runs. After New Zealand was bowled out for just 97, the Kiwis then bowled out the Americans for just 79.

Meanwhile for the Americans, Ritu Singh tried to single handedly get her side over the line, bowling 5/15 from just under four overs. New Zealand spread its wicket taking more evenly, with two wickets from Rishika Jaswal and Kate Irwin the most any bowler took.

South Africa vs Ireland

Rain tried to thwart South Africa and Ireland from taking the field, but they ultimately got on for a reduced to 10-over match. Ireland was first bowled out for 35, before South Africa then reached that target with the loss of only three wickets.

Chief destroyer with the ball for South Africa was Monalisa Legodi who picked up four wickets, while skipper Kayla Reyneke continued her stellar tournament, picking up another three wickets, this time in less than two overs. Meanwhile for Ireland, Jennifer Jackson picked up two of the three wickets that fell.

Australia vs West Indies

Australia remains undefeated at this year’s World Cup after defeating the West Indies by seven wickets in their latest match. The West Indies was bowled out for just 53, before the Aussies then reached that target in just under 11 overs.

Every bowler the Aussies used picked up at least one wicket, with Eleanor Larosa, Caoimhe Bray and Tegan Williamson the best of the bunch with two each.

Sri Lanka vs Scotland

Unfortunately for the Sri Lankans and the Scots, their match was also abandoned before the toss even happened.

India vs Bangladesh

In the final match of the weekend, Bangladesh proved no trouble for India, with the Indians winning by eight wickets. Bangladesh was first restricted to just 8/64, before India then reached the target one ball into the eighth over.

Vaishnavi Sharma had another great day with ball in hand for India, this time taking a trio of wickets. Meanwhile Trisha Gongadi also had a great day with bat in hand, smashing 40 off 31 balls in an innings that included eight fours.
