Tigers pounce to keep season faintly alive

TASMANIA has picked up an important win to stay alive in the race for the WNCL Final, after defeating the ACT by 103 runs. Tasmania made 6/284 from its 50 overs, before bowling the ACT out for just 181.

Tasmania did not have the most convincing of starts to its innings, but a 114 run third wicket partnership really turned things round for the home side. This was backed up by a 78 run fifth wicket partnership later in the innings.

It could have been better for the Meteors if they had bowled straight, with the visitors conceding 14 wides in a total extras tally of 21.

But it was skipper Elyse Villani who lead the way for the Tigers, smacking a run a ball innings of 117. Rachel Trenaman also got in on the runs, scoring 63. Meanwhile for the Meteors, Carly Leeson was the only one to pick up more than one wicket.

After an 74-run third wicket partnership, the innings was looking pretty okay for the ACT in the chase. But as time progressed, scoring slowed and the wickets started to tumble. Then, everything started to fall apart for the Meteors as it so often has in the past. They were eventually bowled out part way through the 43rd over.

Maisy Gibson was the star with the ball for the Tasmanians, taking four wickets, and she was ably aided by a trio of wickets from Amy Smith. Meanwhile Katie Mack was once again the backbone of the ACT innings, making 52.

The win leaves Tasmania in an interesting position on the ladder. The Tigers are only four points behind a spot in the finals, but everyone in front of them on the ladder has two or three games in hand over them.
