Young gun, loveable larrikin take out top gongs
LAST night was the night of nights of Australian cricket, with the Australian Cricket Awards night being held in Melbourne.
The two big awards on the night were the Belinda Clark Award and the Allan Border Medal, with both the eventual winners of those awards hardly a surprise to those in the room or to fans who know the team well.
The Belinda Clark Medal – awarded to the top female player – went to young allrounder Annabel Sutherland, who at 23 is already starting to play like a seasoned veteran of the Australian team and is getting better and better. In a year where she really announced herself on the international stage, she begun the voting period with a double ton against South Africa, and capped it off with the record setting 163 she scored at the MCG last week.
She won the award from Ash Gardner, with Beth Mooney, Alana King and Megan Schutt rounding out the top five.
The Allan Border Medal – awarded to the top male player – went to top order batter Travis Head, who by quirk of the international calendar was not in the room to accept it, but was handed the award in the team hotel in Sri Lanka by coach Andrew McDonald.
He comfortably won the award from Josh Hazlewood, with Pat Cummins, Steve Smith and Mitchell Starc all finishing in the top five.
There were plenty of other awards also handed out last night.
The Allan Border Medal was not Head’s only award of the night, also winning the Men’s ODI Player of the Year.
Gardner might have missed out on the main gong but she did not come away from the night empty handed, winning the Women’s ODI Player of the Year.
Some of the other players to pick up awards last night were Sam Konstas, Chloe Ainsworth, Jess Jonassen and Adam Zampa.
