Queensland puts one foot in final, but can’t rest yet

QUEENSLAND has further cemented its place at the top of the WNCL ladder after another win over South Australia, this time by 40 runs.

After posting 7/327, Queensland then restricted its opponent to just 287 before bowling South Australia out.

Much of Queensland’s success with the bat can be credited to Grace Harris and Charli Knott, with the pair putting on a 127 run partnership for the fourth wicket to really accelerate the innings forward. Not only did the pair score a lot of runs, they did it quickly too, going at about seven runs per over during the partnership.

Knott ultimately top scored for her side, making 110 in an innings that included 10 fours. Harris went on to make 60 from just 47 balls in an innings that included five fours and three sixes. Others to get amongst the runs were Georgia Redmayne (50) and Sianna Ginger (48 not out).

Meanwhile for South Australia Amanda-Jade Wellington took four wickets, while Alex Price picked up two wickets and Courtney Neale picked up one.

After pretty solid start to their innings, the South Australians then piled on a 168 run partnership for the third wicket to really propel the innings forward.

However, later in the innings as the end of the innings drew closer, the Scorpions started to slow down their scoring dramatically and as the wickets kept tumbling, momentum started to stall and ultimately the South Australians ran out of time.

Hollie Armitage (100 off 82 balls) was the backbone of the South Australian innings, and was assisted by Courtney Webb (62) and Madeline Penna (42).

Meanwhile Grace Parsons was the pick of the Queensland bowlers with a trio of wickets, while Knott, Nicola Hancock and Jess Jonassen all picked up two wickets each.

In terms of what this result means, it means Queensland has one foot in the WNCL Final but its spot is not secure yet. With the ladder being so tight, Queensland will need to ideally win both of its last matches against Victoria in order to cement its spot in that final.
