Tassie repeats history to shake up standings
TASMANIA has made it two wins from as many WNCL games against the ACT, this time downing the Meteors by eight wickets at Bellerive Oval yesterday.
After the Meteors were bowled out for just 53, the Tigers then reached that target with more than 20 overs to spare.
In the hindsight of post-match, the fact that the ACT found itself at 1/0 after an over and a half foreshadowed what was to come.
Things never really improved from there, with the visitors’ biggest partnership of the innings a 47-run stand for the seventh wicket. The second wicket partnership of 39 was the only other combination that came close to that mark.
Maisy Gibson and Lauren Smith were chief destroyers with the ball for Tasmania, taking a trio of wickets each as five of the six used bowlers made a dismissal.
Meanwhile for the Meteors, many of their runs came off the bat of young ex-Breaker Shivani Mehta, who made 52.
In reply, the Tigers could not have had a more contrasting start to its innings, with its openers posting 92 before the partnership was broken up.
The fact that those openers were able to score so quickly – nearing triple-figures in just 17 overs – set the Tigers up for a speedy victory, finishing up the job inside the 30th over.
Opener Rachel Trenaman led the way for Tasmania, blasting 10 fours on her way to 80 not out.
Meanwhile for the Meteors, Grace Dignam and Anesu Mushangwe were the only bowlers to take wickets.
This result has done some interesting things to the ladder as the pointy end of the season draws closer.
As things stand, Tasmania is in second place, and if the season was to end tomorrow it would be in the final and in with a chance to again defend its title. However, with less than a win separating second from fifth, it is all to play for in Tasmania’s final pair of matches against Victoria.
