Blues tame Tigers, take bonus point
NEW SOUTH Wales has moved atop of the One-Day Cup standings after a bonus point win over Tasmania in Launceston yesterday. Chasing 206 for victory, the Blues were guided home by Moises Henriques (71* off 83) in just 38.3 overs with seven wickets in hand.
Player of the Match, Henriques was part of two key partnerships, including a 101-run stand with Matthew Gilkes (46 off 63) for the third wicket. After the latter departed, Ollie Davies (40 off 36) reprised his role to help chase down the remaining runs in quick time.
With a relatively meagre total set, opener Josh Philippe went about taking the aggressive route. He smashed six boundaries in a quickfire 30 off 22 before becoming one of Gabe Bell‘s three standalone wickets. The seamer ended up with 3-29 off a full allotment of 10 overs.
Henriques also proved a golden arm with the ball, dismissing both Tasmanian openers for figures of 2-31 (8). Ben Dwarshuis got in on the act with 4-39. The hosts managed only one 50-run partnership despite Caleb Jewell (37 off 42), Jake Doran 34 off 62), and Charlie Wakim (29 off 43) all getting starts.
In his List A debut, Aidan O’Connor managed 27 off 37 batting at number seven, while fellow youngster Will Prestwidge added 23 off 19 to drag the score over 200. Both went wicketless in the bowling innings, with Bell playing a lone hand in resistance to the Blues.
The result sees NSW join South Australia and Victoria on three wins. The Blues’ two bonus points are matched by the SACA’s tally, but they take top spot due to a superior net run rate. Meanwhile, Tasmania remains in fifth spot, nine points adrift from the top two with two rounds remaining.
After returning from a two-month hiatus, both teams will again be in action for a triple-header on Thursday week. New South Wales travels to face Queensland in Brisbane, while Tasmania again plays host as Victoria heads to Hobart.
