West wins again to double season tally

WESTERN AUSTRALIA has picked up its second victory of the WNCL season after a six-wicket win over the ACT yesterday. In the battle of the cellar dwellers, the ACT made 7/208 from its 50 overs, before Western Australia reached that target in just over 46 and a half overs.

As is often the case with the Meteors, a bad start ultimately proved very telling. The hosts found themselves at 2/1 inside the third over, and 3/10 only a couple overs later, then 4/34 halfway through the 13th over.

It was not until the eighth wicket that things really started to get going, which took the Meteors from 7/144 to their final total. It could have been worse for the ACT if Western Australia had bowled straight, with the visitors conceding 23 wides as part of a total extras tally of 28.

Holly Ferling was one half of that partnership, and went on to top score for the whole innings with 47 not out. Early Zoe Cooke also made 47. On the other side of the equation, Emily Arlott topped the bowling tally for Western Australia with three wickets, while Zoe Britcliffe took two wickets.

In reply the start to Western Australia’s batting innings went a lot better than the ACT’s had, with the visitors putting on a 44 run opening partnership before losing their first wicket.

A 59 run third wicket partnership helped accelerate the innings, but the fact that Western Australia was able to not lose a lot of wickets very quickly meant that its momentum was disrupted less often and as such they were able to progress better towards the target.

Mathilda Carmichael was the pick of the batters for Western Australia with her 61 not out, while Maddy Darke again had a solid innings, this time making 59.

Meanwhile for the Meteors, Grace Dignam was the only bowler to pick up more than one wicket.
