Tassie takes out thriller, Bulls beat Blues

KIERAN Elliott has bowled Tasmania to a remarkable Sheffield Shield victory over Victoria, with six of the paceman’s 10 wickets for the match coming in the fourth innings. Defending 270 on the final day at Bellerive Oval, the hosts saluted by 20 runs to jump up to fourth spot on the ladder.

After a rain delay halted the start of play on day four, Victoria resumed on 2-55, still 215 runs in arrears. Peter Handscomb‘s valiant 162-ball knock of 93 nearly dragged his side over the line, though he became the final dismissal of the match and Elliott’s sixth victim of the innings.

Nightwatchman Sam Elliott (34) – no relation to Kieran – combined with Handcomb in a 72-run stand to steer Victoria to 3-129. The visitors still needed 141 runs once Tasmania saw the back of him, a task which seemed all the more daunting after Kieran Elliott forced a mini-collapse in the middle order.

The 3-20 passage across eight overs brought Sam Harper to the crease, whose contribution of 31 brought Victoria past the 200-mark. He, too departed, though skipper Will Sutherland kept the pressure on with a couple of crucial boundaries to bring the required runs down to 26.

It proved a bridge too far for the second-place side, as Kieran Elliott swept up the tail alongside accomplice Gabe Bell (3-93) to secure a memorable victory. The result sees four sides tied on two wins with three rounds left to play. Victoria sits second on three wins, behind frontrunner South Australia.

Meanwhile up in Brisbane, Queensland left it late to defeat New South Wales by 188 runs. The Blues were never on track to reach the 418-run target, but looked well placed to bat out a draw at 7-214.

At that stage, recognised batters Josh Philippe (80) and Jack Edwards (53) were well set having faced a combined 243 deliveries, dragging their side out of a giant hole at 6-89 in a 125-run stand.

Both batters fell within five balls of each other, before tailenders Hanno Jacobs and Liam Hatcher were dismissed without scoring to seal Queensland’s win at the death.

Bulls batter Jack Clayton was named Player of the Match having scored a first innings century, backed up by 76 in his second dig at first drop. Matthew Renshaw also brought up an unbeaten ton atop the order as Queensland set the unassailable target.

It was hardly a match for the bowlers, especially those in Blue, but Queensland pair Michael Neser and Xavier Bartlett picked up six wickets apiece in crucial contributions. The Bulls now sit third, joining Tasmania, New South Wales, and Western Australia on two wins apiece.
