Rocc’ & rolled: Bowlers dominate day one in Shield

Queensland was 4-44 within the first 20 overs, with Rocchiccioli removing Matt Renshaw (11), Hugo Burdon (1), and recent centurion Lachlan Hearne (5). Ben McDermott was the mainstay with a 112-ball top score of 37, though he would succumb as Rocchiccioli’s fifth wicket.
The Bulls’ tail wagged only slightly with contributions of 20 from Xavier Bartlett and the unbeaten Mitch Swepson, as Cameron Gannon (2-32) and Lance Morris (1-25) also got amongst the wickets. Tea was taken during the innings break, leaving WA to bat out the final session.
It was a positive 36 overs for the West Australians, who made it to 1-112 at stumps – just 35 runs in arrears. Returning captain Sam Whiteman (67) raised the bat before being bowled by Tom Whitney (1-31), while Sam Fanning (41) and nightwatchman Rocchiccioli (0 off 21) will resume play on day two.
The ball continued to dominate over in Adelaide, where 20 wickets fell in the clash between ladder leader South Australia and Tasmania. Kieran Elliott continued his stellar form for the Tigers with 6-23 as the SACAs were bowled out for 93, before Brendan Doggett replied with 6-40.

With the visitors managing an eight-run first innings lead, South Australia quickly reclaimed the ascendancy to sit 0-24 at stumps after a positive six-over stint at the death. Connor McInerney (13) and Henry Hunt (10) remain unbeaten at the crease.
A mere 28 was the top score for either side yesterday, by Jason Sangha and Beau Webster respectively. There were eight single-digit scores in both first innings, with two of Tasmania’s top four being rolled for a duck. Among them was Jake Weatherald, who went first ball after tonning up last time out.
Victoria has a task on its hands in its pursuit to hold onto second spot, trailing New South Wales by 146 runs at the SCG. The hosts posted 238 in their first dig, becoming the only side to bat past tea yesterday, before holding Victoria to 4-92 from 24 overs.
The Blues made a rocketing start thanks to openers Sam Konstas (10 off 7) and Nic Maddinson (33 off 27), who combined for 30 off the first two overs. Scott Boland (4-56) brought an end to the reverse ramp madness, going on to spark a 4-18 collapse either side of lunch.
Oliver Davies (89 off 94) rallied in a counterattacking innings but didn’t last long in the final session as his side was rolled within 10 overs of the break. In response, Harry Dixon (38 off 27) eased some pressure for Victoria, who fell to 3-25.
Opener Marcus Harris remains unbeaten on 33 and will resume play alongside nightwatchman Sam Elliott, who faced seven deliveries without scoring. New South Wales currently has four individual wicket takers, with five bowlers rotated through thus far.
