SACAs take control after day one chaos

AFTER an opening day which saw 20 wickets fall, South Australia’s batters began to regain control in their Sheffield Shield clash against Tasmania at Adelaide Oval. Jason Sangha‘s 201-ball knock of 75 proved the backbone of the innings, which will resume at 6-272 on day three.

The hosts lead by 264 runs after conceding a minimal first innings deficit, though that looked a far cry when Gabe Bell (2-44) removed overnight batter Henry Hunt with the first ball of day two. The seamer also trapped Nathan McSweeney in front shortly after to have SA pinned at 2-38.

Their dismissals brought Sangha to the crease alongside Conor McInerney (61), who helped steady the ship in a 100-run stand. Contributions from Harry Nielsen (49) and Liam Scott (43 retired hurt) progressed the scoring and put South Australia into a commanding position at stumps.

After breaking the Sangha-McInerney partnership, Riley Meredith (2-40) also nabbed the key wicket of Nielsen before the close of play. Handy lower-order hitters Ben Manenti (2) and Nathan McAndrew (0) will resume at the crease this morning, looking to quickly add to the SACAs’ lead.

Up at The Gabba, Western Australia also began to gain the upper hand having built a 165-run first innings lead over Queensland. The visitors started day two on 1-112, still 35 runs in arrears, but ended up all out for 312 and remain well poised, with Queensland 1-39 at stumps – still 126 runs behind.

West Australian opener Sam Fanning (95) fell short of a maiden First Class century, but combined with Jayden Goodwin (40) for the second 100-run partnership of the innings. Though, things went pear-shaped after their dismissals as WA lost 5-27 heading into tea.

Hilton Cartwright was left to bat with the tail, finishing unbeaten on 48 as wickets tumbled around him. Michael Neser wreaked havoc with 4-34, including the wicket of Fanning, and was ably supported by Xavier Bartlett (3-46), while skipper Mitch Swepson (1-64) broke the key partnership.

Queensland batted out 15 overs in the final session, losing opener Matthew Renshaw for 10 to rampant spinner Corey Rocchiccioli, who took seven wickets in the first innings. Angus Lovell (26) remained out in the middle alongside Hugo Burdon (0 off 17), with their side well behind the ledger.

New South Wales is well placed against in its clash with Victoria at the SCG, looking to build on its 190-run lead heading into day three. The Vics resumed proceedings yesterday at 4-92, still trailing by 146 runs. Things got worse quickly as Jackson Bird (3-24) struck twice in the opening over.

Marcus Harris (33) failed to add to his overnight score, while Sam Harper was sent packing for a three-ball duck as New South Wales exposed the tail. Though, fortunately for the Vics, it wagged. Mitch Perry 122 deliveries for his 29 as Victoria was bowled out for 182, adding 90 runs for its final four wickets.

With a first innings lead of 56 runs in tow, New South Wales offered the visitors infrequent breakthroughs to head into stumps 190 runs ahead at 4-134. Matthew Gilkes (43) and nightwatchman Liam Hatcher (0 off 17) will resume play, with Scott Boland (2-29) leading Victoria’s attack.
