Aussies stand tall in Capitals’ narrow WIPL win

THE DELHI Capitals survived a massive scare, but ultimately defeated the UP Warriorz by seven wickets in the Women’s Indian Premier League overnight thanks to a couple of Aussies’ match-winning knocks.
Chasing 167 for victory, and although the Capitals did not lose a lot of wickets, they almost ran out of balls to reach the target. The Capitals needed 11 from the final over, and with two fours in the first half of the over they were well on the path to victory. On the penultimate ball of the innings, they achieved the target.
A couple of Aussies starred with the bat for the Capitals, with Meg Lanning making 69 and Annabel Sutherland making 41. Delhi skipper Lanning smashed a massive 12 boundaries en route to her half century score, achieving 69 in just 49 balls.
Sutherland hit four boundaries off a more modest 35, but still kept the run rate flowing. Her third wicket partnership with Marizanne Kapp proved crucial, with teh duo pairing up for an unbeaten 48 as Kapp hit four boundaries herself to tally up a knock of 29 off 17.
Sutherland also had a solid spell with the ball, taking 2026 off four, the only multiple wicket taker in the match. Jess Jonassen (1-21 off four) was the next best Capitals bowler.
Meanwhile for the Warriorz, Kiran Navgire stood up for her side, making a half century with the bat. She hit three over the bench and six to the rope across a quick-fire 27 balls. Navgire and fellow opener Vrinda Dinesh (16 off 15) combined for an opening partnership of 66.
Aside from middle-order contributions from Shweta Sehrawat (37 off 33) and Chinelle Henry (33 of 15), the Warriorz lost wickets cheaply at inopportune times to finish on 7-166. Despite that, they still looked likely to win right up until the second last ball with Deepti Sharma (1-27 off four) and Grace Harris (1-11 off two) the more economical of the Warrioz bowlers.
In a twist of fate of the schedule, these two sides will next be playing each other, with the reverse fixture happening in a couple of days time.
