Thriller sees defending champs hopes remain alive

TASMANIA has ended Victoria’s WNCL Final hopes while keeping its own alive, after defeating the Victorians in dramatic fashion yesterday.
Victoria was chasing 255 for victory, but it ultimately all came down to the last over. The Victorians had to get nine runs in that final over to get the victory, and after scoring a four on the first ball, things were looking good for the visitors. But, the rest of the over saw the Vics lose two wickets and only score three runs, so they could not quite score enough runs.
Earlier the Tasmanians had a slow start to their innings – falling to 3-37 in the 12th over – but then put on a 190-run partnership to turn things around.
Rachel Trenaman was the backbone of the Tasmanian innings, scoring 124, while later Naomi Stalenberg scored 80. Meanwhile, Amy Smith was the star bowler for the home side, picking up five wickets, of which two came in that crucial final over.
Meanwhile for the Victorians Ella Hayward was the star in both innings, taking three wickets than scored 84 with the bat. Nicole Faltum also scored 52.
The two sides battle again tomorrow in a match that Tasmania have to win to even have a hope of making the WNCL Final. Although Tasmania still needs a lot of other results to go its way, the triple reigning champions are still in with a chance for now.
