Mumbai holds off Giants to keep top spot hopes alive

THE MUMBAI Indians have taken one step closer to booking an automatic spot in the Women’s Indian Premier League finals after a narrow win over the Gujarat Giants overnight.
The Giants were chasing 180 for victory, but then lost 3-2 in the final over to completely fall apart right at the death.
Hayley Matthews was crucial at the death for Mumbai, bowling that 3-2 final over to curtail Gujarat’s momentum. Amelia Kerr also picked up a trio of wickets, while Shabnim Ismail picked up a pair of wickets.
Bharti Fulmali (61 off 25 balls) tried to put forward some resistance for Gujarat, but her efforts were ultimately in vain.
Earlier it was player of the match Harmanpreet Kaur who led the way with the bat for Mumbai, smashing nine fours on her way to 54 from just 33 balls.
The result means that Gujarat will finish no higher than third and will play the semi-final. Mumbai meanwhile has one last chance to steal top spot off Delhi when they meet the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the final match of the season tonight.
