Armitage continues fine form as SA continues the streak
To notch up their fourth consecutive win for the season, it was South Australia that took their second win over Tasmania at Karen Rolton Oval on Sunday.
For the home side it was again their new recruit English all-rounder Hollie Armitage that steered them into a winning position. Batting first, Armitage scored 99 off 106 balls, which included 11 boundaries, to help lift South Australia to 290 runs.
Other batting efforts for SA that got them to a defendable total were a fighting 88 off 91 deliveries from opener Bridget Patterson, a bridging knock of 33 off 29 balls from Courtney Webb between Patterson and Armitage’s knocks, and the captain Jemma Barsby‘s quickfire innings (28 not out off 17).
On the other side of this first innings, it was spinner Maisy Gibson and quick Nicola Carey that were the most beneficial for Tasmania. Gibson took 2-59, which included the scalps of the dangerous Webb and in-form Ellie Johnston, while Carey contributed with the most important wicket of Armitage as well as Eleanor Larosa in the back end of the innings.
Chasing 290 was going to be a big ask but with the quality within the Tigers side, it was always a total that could be chased down at a smaller ground. Tasmania got off to a shaky start losing three key wickets in the first 14 overs.
Elyse Villani (14 off 7), Lizelle Lee (23 off 33) and Carey (17 off 30) were all in the sheds with Tasmania only at 70 runs total. Resistance was provided by all-rounder Naomi Stalenberg who scored 51 off 70 balls, however despite some cameos, no-one stayed with her long term at the crease.
Emma Manix-Geeves (20 off 27) and Ruth Johnston (35 off 40), were trying to keep Tasmania in it but failed to really trouble the bowlers with their strike rate.
Bowler Molly Strano produced the second-highest score for the Tigers, with her unbeaten knock of 41 taking her side all the way to the final over.
When considering the bowlers that did the job for South Australia, it was their veteran leg-spinner Amanda-Jade Wellington that was dependable once again. She claimed four wickets in the contest, all of which were Tasmania’s top batters (Lee, Carey, Stalenberg and Tabatha Saville).
