2024 T20 Spring Challenge: Day Four

THERE were two matches that were played on day four of the T20 Spring Challenge with thumping wins the order of the day.

ACT Meteors 93 (16.1) defeated by Brisbane Heat 3-94 (12.2)

The Brisbane Heat took out a seven-wicket win at Allan Border Oval to begin day four proceedings. They ended the Meteors’ winning start to the competition in style, bowling them out inside 17 overs for a low total.

Their bowling attack was headed by youngster Sianna Ginger, who was brilliant taking 3-14 which included Paris Bowdler who was dismissed for a second-ball duck.

The Heat’s other bowlers that impressed were Lucy Hamilton (2/5 off 2.1 overs), Nicola Hancock (2/14 off three) and Charli Knott (1/17 off three).

The Meteors’ highest scorer was Carly Leeson who notched up 41 runs off 30 deliveries, almost half her team’s total. Both Alisha Bates (16 off 18) and Annie Wikman (10 off 11) got starts but no other batter scored over six.

Brisbane chased down the total quickly, hitting the 94 runs needed inside 13 overs. Mikayla Wrigley and Laura Harris were the pair that started well for the Heat contributing 32 not out and 17 off 14 respectively.

The duo scored 43 off the first four overs of their innings to truly sink the Meteors’ hopes of a third consecutive win.

After the fall of Harris, it was Charli Knott (21 off 20) that contributed through the middle of the innings before she was dismissed as Holly Ferling got a late consolation wicket.

Hobart Hurricanes 2-139 defeated Perth Scorchers 5-136

It was another strong batting effort from the Hobart Hurricanes that saw them get their second consecutive win of the tournament when they beat the Scorchers by eight wickets.

Played at the neutral Karen Rolton Oval in Adelaide, the Hurricanes bowled first reducing the Scorchers to 5-136 off 20 overs.

Hayley Silver-Holmes’s first over was a tough watch, going for 15 runs at the hands of Bhavisha Devchand (10 off 12) and Maddy Darke (24 off 28).

Mikayla Hinkley was another batter that was able to contribute for the Scorchers making 32 runs.

Although after their quick start it was the Hurricanes’ Callie Wilson (3/25) that was able to wrestle some momentum back through her economical bowling alongside Ruth Johnston (0/8 off two overs). Wilson was imperative to their performance removing Devchand and captain Chloe Piparo. Lauren Smith also took a wicket, that of the dangerous Darke.

In the batting innings for Hobart it was Johnson that completed her all-round performance with a half-century. She scored the un-beaten 50 off just 37 balls which included seven fours.

The ‘Canes’ reached the total with 29 balls to spare, with Lizelle Lee (32 off 21), Nicola Carey (18 off 16) and Elyse Villani (33 not out off 17) all chipping in to edge them to their total.
