Kiwis Queens of the Castle after big win

NEW ZEALAND are the new Queens of T20 cricket after a 32 run win over South Africa this morning to win their first T20 World title.

After posting 5/158 from its 20 overs, New Zealand then restricted South Africa to just 9/126 from its 20 overs.

New Zealand got out to a quick start to their innings, and was able to maintain a solid pace despite losing a decent number of wickets.

Amelia Kerr starred with the bat for the New Zealanders, hitting four fours in a 38 ball innings of 43. Brooke Halliday also had a solid innings, making 38.

Meanwhile for South Africa Nonkululeko Mlaba was the pick of the bowlers with two wickets to her name.

South Africa made a really good start to its chase, but once first wicket Tazmin Brits fell, things started to fall apart and the Proteas lost 8/75 after that to fall well short of their target.

Unsurprisingly, much of South Africa’s score came from their opening pair, with captain Laura Wolvaardt ultimately top scoring on 33.

Meanwhile Kerr and Rosemary Mair shared the top wicket taking honours for the White Ferns, both picking up three wickets each.

Kerr went on to be named player of the tournament after and topping the wicket tally and finishing in the top 10 for most runs in the tournament.

“I’m a little bit speechless and I’m just so stoked to get the win,” Kerr said after winning the award. “It’s what dreams are made of.

“You want to be a big-match player and I guess bowling through those middle overs, it’s when the best batters are constructing their innings and if you can make a breakthrough it can push teams back and that’s my job. Wickets come and go and thankfully they’ve come my way this tournament.”
