Big batting displays headline wins for Renegades and Hurricanes

SATURDAY brought about the Melbourne Renegades’ first win of WBBL|10, while the Hurricanes continued to thrive winning their second game of the season.

Brisbane Heat cop first loss of the season

Despite Grace Harris‘ 57 ball 75, the Brisbane Heat lost their first game this season to the Hobart Hurricanes. In chasing the Heat’s 173, the Hurricanes completed their highest ever successful WBBL chase.

Harris’ knock was the perfect platform for the Heat to launch, with her 75 featuring 10 fours and a six. The only other batter that performed was club debutant Jemimah Rodrigues who belted 45 off 27 balls. This helped Brisbane to their 5-173 total.

For Hobart, it was English batter Danni Wyatt-Hodge that set the tone in the second half, hitting 62 runs off just 35 balls which included six fours and three sixes.

Opening up with Wyatt-Hodge, fellow international signing Lizelle Lee (38 runs) formed the other half of the first wicket 55-run partnership. In the end, the Hurricanes won by seven wickets, winning the game with two balls to spare.

Elyse Villani (32 off 29) and Heather Graham (26 off 14), were left unbeaten at the end of the match, with the veteran pair able to steady for their side.

Big opening stand gets the ‘Gades going

Opening partnerships were the order of the day on Saturday, but none came bigger than Courtney Webb and Hayley Matthews‘ 102-run partnership, which saw the Renegades pick up their first win of the tournament.

In the end, it was a straightforward chase for Melbourne, who had only 140 runs to chase after bowling Perth out. Their captain Sophie Molineux was instrumental in their showing, delivering 4-17 from her allotted four overs.

The Scorchers struggled to cope with the spin from the Renegades with all ten wickets falling to Molineux, Matthews, Alice Capsey and Georgia Wareham.

Beth Mooney‘s 36 off 25 was the highest contribution for Perth with the bat, truly illustrating the dominance of Melbourne.
