Sixers thwart Stars and rain to claim victory
AS MUCH as the rain tried to thwart the fun out at Junction Oval yesterday, the match was still able to be completed and the Sydney Sixers emerged victorious over Melbourne Stars.
The Stars originally made 7/122 from their 18 overs, but the Sixers’ target was revised to 125 thanks to the Duckworth Lewis Method. Further rain meant that when the game was ultimately halted 15 overs into the Sixers’ innings, they were six runs ahead of the Duckworth Lewis par score, handing them the win.
The home side made an industrious start to their innings, going at about eight runs an over before they lost their first wicket.
They then really struggled to get going after that, with only one partnership really getting close to the initial 32-run stand. The innings did have an emphatic end though, with Rhys McKenna belting a six off the final ball of the innings.
Skipper Annabel Sutherland tried to provide some resistance for the stars with a 36 ball, 42 run innings that included two fours and two sixes, but with the next highest individual score being Yastika Bhatia’s 20, she was a bit of a lone hand.
Meanwhile for the Sixers Sophie Ecclestone was the top wicket getter with three wickets to her name. Amelia Kerr, on debut for the Sixers, was expensive but rallied late to pick up two wickets while Ellyse Perry picked up one.
In the chase, initially things were looking very promising for the Stars when Kim Garth claimed the wicket of Sarah Bryce on the first ball of the second over to have the Sixers reeling at 1/1.
However that would be the last wicket to fall as Perry and Kerr showed off their class, putting on a partnership of 103 runs. Perry went on to finish on 48 not out, while Kerr made 46 not out.
