Young gun stuns, as her Heat best the Stars
In a tournament that has seen some of the best up-and-coming young talent, it’s Brisbane Heat bowler Lucy Hamilton that was the headlining act in Sunday’s action.
She claimed 5/8 against the Melbourne Stars, a spell which included the wickets of Yastika Bhatia, Annabel Sutherland, Meg Lanning, Tess Flintoff and Deepti Sharma. Taking five of the first seven wickets, she set her side up for victory early with her economical bowling.
Shikha Pandey got in on the action with two wickets to her name, while another youngster Grace Parsons took the important scalp of Marizanne Kapp.
For the Stars, it was Kim Garth that top-scored with 31 not out off 20 balls. Only Rhys McKenna (20 off 15), Sutherland (21 off 18) and Lanning (13 off 14) really got starts outside of Garth, but no scorer really troubled the Heat.
Chasing a score of 138, it was only a matter of how quickly Brisbane could chase it as one of the in-form sides with the bat. Georgia Redmayne got them off to a good start with a solid 19 off 17 balls, before being run out.
Grace Harris (six off five balls), was gone early, however, it was the work of Jemimah Rodrigues (45 off 31) and Charli Knott (35 not out off 36), that propelled them to victory. After Rodrigues fell, Laura Harris hit a quickfire 10 off five balls, while their captain Jess Jonassen (17 off 11 not out) stayed with Knott to end the chase with 15 balls to spare.
Sydney Sixers close to tournament wash-out with washed out result
The Sydney derby ended without a result due to rain at Drummoyne Oval. This puts the Sixers in very real danger of missing finals, while it helps the Thunder keep top spot on the ladder.
The batting innings of the Thunder was not very impressive, apart from the contributions of Georgia Voll (29 off 17) and captain Phoebe Litchfield (28 off 25 balls).
Later on in the batting, it was England international Georgia Adams (19 off 26) and Sammy-Jo Johnson (14 off 16), that tried to resurrect the innings, however they only managed 121 on the board.
In the pursuit of the total, the Sixers got to 1/9, with Ellyse Perry out for a run-a-ball eight runs. Then the rain set in with Amelia Kerr on one run and Ash Gardner on 0 off two balls.
