Renegades and Hurricanes win, but not all is set in stone

IT WAS a good day yesterday for the Melbourne Renegades and the Hobart Hurricanes in the Women’s Big Bash League, with the former moving to the top of the table and the latter tentatively booking their place in the finals.

RENEGADES TOPPLE THUNDER IN TOP OF TABLE CLASH

Melbourne Renegades won their top of the table clash against Sydney Thunder, defeating those in lime green by nine wickets. After bowling the Thunder out for just 133, the Renegades then reached the target just under halfway through the 15th over.

The win was set up by some stellar bowling from Sophie Molineux, who took a quartet of wickets, and was ably assisted by Georgia Wareham and Deandra Dottin, who took two wickets each. Molineux also made 42 not out with the bat, but was outscored by Hayley Matthews who made 60 not out.

Meanwhile for the Thunder, the best with the bat was Phoebe Litchfield who made 30, while Sam Bates was their sole wicket taker.

The win means that the Renegades move to the top of the table, and will host the final if the Brisbane Heat do not beat the Sydney Sixers in their final game.

HURRICANES COOL SCORCHERS TO TEMPORARILY MOVE INTO TOP FOUR

Hobart Hurricanes also emerged victorious from yesterday’s action, picking up a three-wicket win over Perth Scorchers. Hobart restricted Perth to 138 before bowling the Scorchers out, and reaching the target with 14 balls spare.

Amy Smith helped set things up for the Hurricanes with a trio of wickets, while Lauren Smith took two wickets. Later Lizelle Lee smashed 44 off just 22 balls to really get the chase off to a good start.

Meanwhile for the Scorchers Beth Mooney made a half century at the top of the order, but with the tail having no wag it was all in vain. Sophie Devine also had a good game with ball in hand, taking four wickets.

The win puts the Hurricanes temporarily in the final four, but they will stay there if the Sixers do not manage to beat the Heat later today.
