Heat win, but not quick enough for big goal
THE FINAL day of the Women’s Big Bash League home and away season was certainly entertaining, and tied up some loose ends ahead of an exciting finals series.
With the morning match between the Stars and Strikers falling victim to the unpleasant Melbourne weather, it all came down to the final match of the season between the Brisbane Heat and the Sydney Sixers.
The equation was pretty simple. Both had to have a decent sized win, but for the Brisbane Heat it was to go top of the table, while for the Sixers it was to sneak into the top four.
Brisbane won the toss and elected to send their visitors into bat, and initially that looked like it might have been mistake as Ellyse Perry and Amelia Kerr put on a really solid 63 run opening partnership. Once Perry got dismissed, the partnerships were 12, then 15, then things started to really fall apart for those in magenta. After Kerr was the third wicket to fall, the Sixers then lost 7/50 to really undo the openers’ solid start.
Kerr finished with 41, while Perry made 33 and Sarah Bryce made 28.
Meanwhile for the Heat Lucy Hamilton and Jess Jonassen were the stars with ball in hand, taking three wickets each, while Nicola Hancock took two wickets.
In the innings break, the maths was redone and the equation was set. To go top of the table, the Heat needed to reach the target in 13 and a half overs, while to make finals the Sixers need to restrict the Heat to 56 or less.
Things were looking pretty good for the Sixers early when the Heat fell to 1/9 in the second over, but that did not last too long as the second wicket partnership was 49 runs. They then lost two wickets in two balls to have a bit of a wobble, but still recovered to reach the target and pick up the win. However, it was not quick enough to give the Heat the run rate boost they needed to go to the top of the table, only reaching the target with three overs to spare.
Jonassen also had a great day with the bat, top scoring with Jemimah Rodrigues with an innings of 39.
Meanwhile for the Sixers Kerr and Caoimhe Bray were the pick of the bowlers with two wickets each to their name.
Brisbane will now sit back and wait for The Challenger to run to see who their opponent will be in The Knockout.
