Queensland repeats history to defeat ACT again
QUEENSLAND has made it two wins in the WNCL against the ACT in a week, this time downing the Meteors by six wickets.
The Meteors were only able to make 168 before being bowled out, and Queensland was able to reach that target with ease in just under 22 overs.
The ACT innings got off to a far from ideal start, with the side falling to 1/5 at the end of the first over.
Things did improve a little from there with Katie Mack and Grace Dignam putting on a 55 run partnership, but unfortunately for the home side that would be the biggest partnership of the innings. There was a 40 run partnership later in the innings, but that would be the only other partnership of significant substance. Dignam went on to top score with 31, while Mack made 24.
Things could have been even worse for the Meteors if Queensland had bowled straight, with the Fire conceding 17 wides in a total extras tally of 20. Such was the dire state of the ACT innings, Dignam and Mack were the only batters to outscore the extras tally, with most batters making scores in the teens.
Meanwhile Jess Jonassen was chief destroyer with the ball for Queensland with four wickets to her name, while every other bowler that was used took a single wicket.
In reply Queensland also got off to a rocky start, falling to 1/15 halfway through the third over, but that was followed with a 115 run partnership between Lauren Winfield-Hill and Charli Knott, which really got things going. This partnership put the Fire well on track for the win, and although they lost two more wickets, the speed with which that second wicket partnership went at meant that they had plenty of time to get the 39 runs needed to win, and so in the end it was a mere formality.
Knott was the star with the bat for the Fire, smashing 12 fours on her way to 79 not out. Winfield-Hill also had a good day with the bat, making 45.
Meanwhile Dignam also starred with the ball after top scoring with the bat, and was the only ACT bowler to take more than one wicket.
