‘Canes crack top spot after trumping Thunder

THE HOBART Hurricanes have moved to the top of the table in the Big Bash League after claiming an impressive win over the Sydney Thunder to the tune of six wickets at Ninja Stadium on Friday night.

Despite a David Warner masterclass setting the total at 165, the home side got the job done with 19 balls to spare, thanks to another power-hitting display from Tim David. The result moves Hobart to top spot on the ladder with the end of the season approaching.

Warner helped the Thunder get to a solid total in the first innings, keeping his good run of form going with a fourth consecutive total of over 48 runs. He ended with an unbeaten 88 runs off 66 balls, and threaten to overcome Hobart’s impressive work with ball in hand and in the field.

Teenage sensation Sam Konstas managed just four runs in a disappointing return to the BBL, as the Hurricanes bowling attack got going on their home deck. Riley Meredith was the pick of the bunch with figures of 2/30, while Nathan Ellis, Chris Jordan and Nikhil Chaudhary all took one wicket each to ensure the hosts remained in striking distance.

For the second match in a week, David erupted at the crease with another match-winning display, posting 68 from just 38 balls in another powerful innings. His knock included six sixes and four fours and further demonstrated his ability to tear a match open at the crease.

The Hurricanes put the game to bed in the power surge, making the most of some sloppy bowling from the Thunder to cruise home to victory with over three overs to spare.
