Stars keep season alive with Derby win

ANOTHER masterful knock from Glenn Maxwell has helped keep the Melbourne Stars’ season alive, leading his side to a 42-run win over the Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League at Marvel Stadium on Sunday night.

The Stars looked in serious trouble at 7/75 in the first innings, before Maxwell put the hammer down to get his side to a defendable total. In a performance that showed glimpses of his World Cup double-century against Afghanistan, it was boundaries or bust for the veteran in what was a winning formula.

Maxwell finished the innings with a knock of 90 runs from his 52 deliveries faced, and blasted 10 sixes during his time at the crease, putting on an 81-run partnership with Usama Mir, which is a remarkable feat given the latter only recorded a five-ball duck as his star teammate declined singles in order to stay on strike. It worked for the Stars, setting the required total at 165.

The Renegades were simply no match in the second innings, falling well short of the target as the Stars delivered with ball in hand too. Despite bowling 10 deliveries in the first over, Mark Steketee produced stunning figures of 5/17 as the ‘Gades batting order failed to make a mark.

One positive for the Renegades was the performance of Fergus O’Neill, who came devastatingly close to a hattrick in the first innings. His hattrick ball looked to have been successful, with Stars skipper Marcus Stoinis getting too much elevation on the ball, but the catch was grounded by Kane Richardson, denying O’Neill one of the best feats in cricket.

The Stars now look towards a tantalising matchup with the Hobart Hurricanes next up as the two form sides of the BBL lock horns with Melbourne looking to keep its season alive having remained undefeated in 2025.
