Monster score motors India to series win

INDIA has claimed its three match ODI series with Ireland with a match in hand after a 116 run win in match two overnight.

A 156 run opening partnership helped rocket India to a massive 5/370, before the home side then restricted their visitors to just 7/254.

It was a tough day in the field for the Irish, with wickets hard to come by.

The opening partnership for India may have been big, but the third partnership was even bigger, with Harleen Deol and Jemimah Rodrigues combining for 83 runs.

Rodrigues would go on to make her first ever international century, smashing 2 fours on her way to 102. Deol went on to make 89, while earlier Smriti Mandhana made 73 and Pratika Rawal made 67.

Meanwhile for Ireland Orla Prendergast picked up the first two wickets of the innings while Arlene Kelly also took two wickets.

In the end, the chase proved to be a mountain just too big to climb for the Irish. Needing to consistently go at over seven runs an over from ball one, the Irish just could not sustain that kind of pace for long enough, despite the efforts of the likes of Christina Coulter Reilly. Coulter Reilly’s 80 was quite a stabilising force in the middle of the innings, but no one else was able to quite match her at her level.

For comparison, the next highest score was Sarah Forbes with 38, while Laura Delany made 37 and most of the others made scores in the teens.

Meanwhile for the hosts Deepti Sharma took a trio of wickets, while Priya Mishra took two of them.

The final match of the series is set to take place on Wednesday, and may be a dead rubber but both sides are sure to still have a set of goals they want to achieve in the match.
