Meteors’ superior batting effort trumps Victoria once again
THE ACT Meteors have featured twice on the winners list after this weekend, netting back-to-back victories against Victoria at EPC Solar Park.
For the home side, it was the efforts of all-rounder Olivia Porter, in combination with captain Katie Mack (46 off 57) and Carly Leeson (29* off 35) which stood out most.
Porter (80* off 101 balls) batted brilliantly in her team’s pursuit of Victoria’s 172-run total. Her match-winning knock included 10 fours.
She was joined by Mack at the crease after the swift departure of Grace Dignam (one off two). Mack again featured for the Meteors, providing the perfect foil for Porter until her dismissal at the hands of Sophie Day.
Leeson took to the middle after Mack’s demise, finishing the innings with four boundaries of her own.
In the bowling innings, it was Jasmine Nevins (0-15 off five overs) that was the most economical, although it was the usual pair of Day and Milly Illingworth that notched up the pair of ACT wickets.
Batting first, Victoria set a total off the back of the work of Sophie Reid and Meg Lanning. Reid hit 40 off 51 deliveries faced, this featured five fours which was the highest number of boundaries by a Victorian player.
Lanning played an important role through the middle order, tallying 37 off 46 balls before being dismissed leg before wicket by Gabby Sutcliffe.
A few players got starts for the away side with first drop batter Ella Hayward (14 off 36) having trouble putting pressure on the bowlers with her low strike rate, followed by Tess Flintoff (four off 11) and Rhys McKenna (16 off 18). After them, it was the turn of the final four batters, which was not ideal.
The trio didn’t make the most of their starts or were unable to stay at the crease long enough to continue any partnerships that were able to get them to a defendable total in the end.
The ACT bowlers did the job against Victoria with Leeson (four wickets) and Zoe Cooke (three) contributing strongly. Sutcliffe and Anesu Mushangwe added one wicket each in this fixture.
