England falls apart again as Aussies clean sweep Ashes ODIs

AUSTRALIA has clean swept the one dayer portion of the Women’s Ashes after an 86 run win in the third ODI today in Hobart.

The Aussies posted 8/308, before England could only muster 222 before being bowled out.

Things were not looking that sweet for the home side, with a top order battling collapse leaving the side at 4/59 partway through the 15th over.

But, Beth Mooney and Ash Gardner turned the home side’s fortunes around, and with an almost 100 run partnership, things were looking better. The runs did not stop there once that partnership was broken though, with Gardner and Tahlia McGrath adding a 103 run partnership to the tally to heap more pain on the visitors. A quick fire push from Georgia Wareham right at the death gave the tally a boost over the 300 mark.

But, Gardner was the true star of the show, smashing her first ever ODI century for her country. Mooney and McGrath both made half centuries in also stellar innings.

Meanwhile for the visitors Lauren Bell, Natalie Sciver-Brunt and Charlie Dean all picked up two wickets each.

In reply, things were looking ok part way through the English chase. They sat at 4/151 halfway through the 31st over, which was perhaps slow but nothing to be alarmed about.

Then, once Wareham removed the very dangerous and at that point very set Sciver-Brunt, things fell apart for the English. After Sciver-Brunt’s dismissal, the English then lost 6/71 to be all out part way through the 43rd over.

It was Alana King who really destroyed the second half of the English batting line up, taking five wickets in a stellar performance. Earlier Megan Schutt took three wickets while Wareham finished with two.

Meanwhile for the English Sciver-Brunt ultimately made 61, while Tammy Beaumont had earlier made 54.

The series now moves into its T20 portion, which begins in Sydney on Monday night.
